Coffs Creek Walkway/Cycleway

Ride Report 7th June 2015

Ian Scott

Nine riders collected at BP North Urunga for an easy ride to Coffs to explore the Coffs Creek Walkway. After the terrible weather of the last couple of days, it was a pleasure to be confronted by brilliant blue skies and a very comfortable temperature, It is winter after all!

As we were climbing Perrys Hill, Dave S. and Don S. caught up with us to swell the ranks to 11. It’s getting a bit confusing with all these names, the group now has 3 Daves and 3 Dons. Maybe we should issue serial numbers!

The route to Coffs was the new highway, cycleway to the hospital, then the highway again. Mike took the honours of the first incident of the day, getting a flat tyre near Halls Rd.

At Combine street we deviated around some back streets to join Elbow St and cross the highway to join the creek walkway near Coffs swimming pool. It was a very pleasant ride around the walkway even including dodging the occasional walker and runner. Pretty soon we arrived at Dolphin Marine Magic which was our designated coffee stop.

As we soaked up the sun enjoying our coffee, the Coffs BUG group arrived for a coffee stop as well. That is twice in a couple of weeks where the two groups have arrived at the same coffee stop, luckily both venues coped with all the thirsty cyclists.

The recent rain caused a re-think of the route as the second half of the walkway is gravel and dirt and can get quite boggy in spots. It was decided to skip the second half and go home via Orlando St, Harbour Drive, Earl St past the golf club then the highway. On the way back to Urunga along the new highway, Mike broke a spoke and Phil had a puncture. Overall a pleasant ride on an almost perfect Coffs Coast winter’s day.
