Sawtell Surf Saunter for Easter Sunday

The storm clouds over the Mid North Coast must have put riders off today as there were only six starters from Urunga BP today – Phil, Fiona, Mark, George, Colleen and Mike. Picking up Kirk and Kerrie at Repton boosted the numbers but it was still a small group that rode to the Sawtell Surf Club Kiosk for coffee.

Colleen and George kept to the new highway, struggling with a couple of injuries that meant hills were best avoided. It worked out well because their slower pace and shorter route meant that they met up with the other group (faster paced but along the old highway) at about the same time at each meeting place.

Rain had gone through the area a short time before, so the road was wet enough to emblazon stripes of mud and road grunge up everyone’s back, and up your front as well if you rode too close to the cyclist in front. But the rain itself held off and it was a quick, uneventful trip 25km to coffee.

Staff at the kiosk were great, quickly getting out a couple of tables, chairs and an umbrella for the group eventhough the venue was already packed. We were joined by ED and Dave Chambers who for different reasons had to drive not cyclee to join us for coffee. The pounding surf, the slowly emerging sun and the good coffee combined to make a fantastic Easter Sunday coffee stop and ride.

Next week’s scheduled ride is the 50km+ Hydes Creek Ride. One section is unsealed, on this ride that goes from the Urunga BP, out Butlers Road to Glenifer, then back to Bellingen for coffee. Departure is at 8am from Urunga BP.
