NZ Day 2 Thames

It started out a pleasant, but overcast day.  We left early from the motel, after a local pilot tried to continually buzz us, turning “lift” up the first of the climb over the range to the west coast of Firth of Thames.  Hugging the coastline with a reasonable headwind, we stopped for coffee at Kaiaua and joined the main road at Waitakaruru after waiting for everyone to catch up.  Well almost all, Don &  Michelle found the hot springs at Miranda a welcome temptation and stayed awhile.
The remainder of the group battled the last 25 km into Thames in moderate, steady rain and were relieved to find Colleen had organised caravan park accommodation nestled in the hills of Thames.  Thames is one of the larger towns outside Auckland and was a great opportunity for LIz to fix her bike.
Robert shows us his culinary talents this night with some traditional NZ lamb & apple strudel.
Distance: 79 km
Highlight:  Robert, after previous day struggling up hills, leads the way and shows us how it is all done.
